Switching on Morocco's Super-Solar Farm

In November, I outlined Morocco's ambitious plans to vastly expand their solar capacity over coming years. And earlier this month, King Mohammed VI, will switch on the first phase of this project, which will provide electricity to circa 650,000 local households.

Although slightly delayed (due to start in December), this is an impressive feat of engineering, with the thermal panels able to provide energy even after the sun has set. The second phase of this project is due to commence in coming months.

This project is part of a huge development of solar power in Africa, with the first thermal power plant opened in South Africa this time last year, supplying electricity to 80,000 households. There is also significant investment in more localised, smaller solar projects, aiming to expand electricity access to remote African communities. This is certainly an area to keep a keen eye on for future development.
